Updated 5 November 2026

Short answer: cheap web hosting in the Netherlands is cheap in the first year, not always after. Most hosts sell a promo price for the first months or the first year and then renew at a much higher regular price, often without VAT in the headline. In our check of ten Dutch hosts on 5 November 2026, ServerSpark Web Start had the lowest regular price (€1.09 a month, same price every year) and the lowest 2-year total (€21.78 paid yearly). Some hosts are cheaper in the first year, and we name them below.

This guide explains what you really pay: promo price versus renewal price, the 2-year total, VAT, what should be included, and the red flags to look for. All competitor numbers come from our web hosting comparison, checked on each host's own website on 5 November 2026. Prices may have changed since.

Promo price versus renewal price

The price in big letters is usually a promo price. It runs for a set period and then the regular price starts, which is the price you pay for most of the time your website is online. In our comparison the regular prices of the other hosts ranged from €1.33 to €12.09 a month, VAT included. All promos in our comparison:

  • Site.nl Basis: €0.61 a month for the first 12 months, then €3.62 a month.
  • Vimexx Webhosting Nederland Basic: €0.54 a month for the first month, then €3.62 a month.
  • mijn.host Starter: €2.41 a month for the first 12 months, then €4.83 a month.
  • Junda Basic: €2.41 a month for the first 12 months, then €4.83 a month.
  • Cloud86 Start: €3.57 a month for the first 12 months, then €4.78 a month.
  • Hostnet Webhosting Lite: €6.04 a month for the first 12 months, then €12.09 a month.
  • Antagonist Webhosting Slim: €6.72 a month for the first 12 months, then €12.09 a month.
  • TransIP Core: €1.21 a month for the first 3 months, then €12.09 a month.

ServerSpark has no promo price: Web Start costs €0.99 a month paid per quarter, €1.09 with monthly billing or €10.89 a year, and you pay the same when you renew.

What you pay over two years

Because promo periods differ, the fairest way to compare is the total for the first two years. The table below takes the promo period at the promo price plus the rest of the 24 months at the regular price, VAT included, sorted by 2-year total.

Host and planYear 1Year 22-year total
ServerSpark Web Start (paid yearly)€10.89€10.89€21.78
bHosted Hosting 1GB€16.00€16.00€32.00
Site.nl Basis€7.26€43.41€50.67
Strato Starter€36.00€36.00€72.00
Vimexx Webhosting Nederland Basic€40.35€43.41€83.76
mijn.host Starter€28.90€57.93€86.83
Junda Basic€28.90€57.93€86.83
Cloud86 Start€42.84€57.35€100.19
Hostnet Webhosting Lite€72.46€145.05€217.51
Antagonist Webhosting Slim€80.59€145.05€225.64
TransIP Core€112.43€145.05€257.48

In the first year Site.nl (€7.26) is cheaper than we are (€10.89). Site.nl and Vimexx also have a lower monthly price at the start. From year two the regular price counts, and over two years ServerSpark had the lowest total in this comparison. If you only want hosting for a few months, a promo can be the better deal: just set a reminder before it renews.

VAT: included or not

8 of the ten hosts we checked show their prices without VAT. As a consumer you pay 21% on top. For example, TransIP lists €9.99 a month, which is €12.09 with VAT. bHosted doesn't say on its page whether its price includes VAT. Our prices always include VAT. When you compare, always convert to the same basis, or you compare a price without VAT with one that includes it.

Also check the contract term. A low price often needs a 1, 2 or 3-year contract paid in advance, and a monthly contract can cost more or come with a setup fee.

What should be included

  • Mail on your own domain. An address like info@yourdomain.nl looks more professional than a free mail address. Check how many mailboxes you get and whether webmail is included. Strato Starter includes 1 mailbox. Our Web Start has 3, our bigger plans more.
  • SSL. Every website needs HTTPS. A free certificate (Let's Encrypt) that renews automatically should be standard; don't pay extra for a basic certificate.
  • Backups. Look for automatic daily backups that you can restore yourself, and how many days they are kept. Our plans keep nightly backups for 7 or 14 days, depending on the plan.
  • Storage and limits. Most simple websites need a few GB at most. "Unlimited" usually comes with a fair-use policy, so read what it means.

Red flags

  • The renewal price is not on the order page, or only in the terms.
  • The headline price is without VAT and the VAT basis is hard to find.
  • The low price needs a long contract paid in advance, and it renews automatically at the regular price.
  • Setup fees, or paid extras for things that should be standard, like SSL or restoring a backup.
  • No mail on your own domain, or only one mailbox.
  • A domain name that is cheap the first year and expensive after. Check the renewal price of the domain too.

When cheap is fine, and when it isn't

Cheap web hosting is fine for a personal website, a portfolio, a blog, a club or hobby site, a landing page or a simple WordPress site with normal traffic. Those sites don't need much, and the price difference over a few years adds up.

Cheap is the wrong choice when you need something an entry plan doesn't give you: a webshop with many orders an hour, many websites for clients, phone support, a contract that requires servers inside the Netherlands (ours are in Germany, EU), or lots of storage or mailboxes. Then pay for the plan that fits, at us or elsewhere.
