For a Rust server, memory depends on three things: the map size, the number of players and how far you are into the wipe. As a rule of thumb: 8 GB for up to about 25 players on a map up to 3500, 12 GB for a community up to about 75 players, and 16 GB for large maps and heavy plugin sets. At ServerSpark Rust 8 GB costs €7.19 per month paid per quarter. Rust 12 GB (€10.49) and Rust 16 GB (€13.39) are billed monthly only: there is no quarterly or yearly price for those two.

Which size for how many players?

Your serverPlanPrice
Friends or a group up to ~25 players, map size up to 3500, a normal set of pluginsRust 8 GB (40 GB NVMe)€7.19 per month paid per quarter, or €7.49 with monthly billing
A community up to ~75 players, map 3500–4500, more pluginsRust 12 GB (60 GB NVMe)€10.49 per month, monthly billing only
Large maps (4500+), custom maps with many prefabs, heavy plugin sets, long wipesRust 16 GB (80 GB NVMe)€13.39 per month, monthly billing only

Prices include 21% VAT. Every plan has Oxide/uMod support and RCON with your own password. You can upgrade later without a wipe.

Why monthly only for 12 and 16 GB? Those two plans are only offered with monthly billing. You pay each month's invoice yourself and nothing is charged automatically, so you can stop after any month, for example at the end of a wipe.

Why a Rust server uses more memory over a wipe

A fresh map uses the least memory. Every base, deployable, box and sleeping player is an entity the server keeps in memory. A server that starts at a few GB on wipe day can use much more after a week of building. That is why:

  • The map size matters. A bigger map (the server.worldsize setting) has more monuments, more terrain and more room for bases. Default is 3000; 4000 and up is for large populations.
  • Wipe length matters. A server that wipes weekly needs less than one that runs a full month on the same map.
  • Plugins add up. Most Oxide or Carbon plugins are light, but a big set (shops, kits, events, skins, NPCs) adds memory and CPU time.
  • Custom maps vary. A custom map with many extra prefabs can use far more memory than a procedural map of the same size.

Pick the map size for your player count

A map that is too big for your players feels empty; one that is too tight feels crowded. Rough guide:

  • Up to ~15 players: server.worldsize 2000 to 2500.
  • 15 to 50 players: 3000 to 3500.
  • 50 to 100+ players: 4000 to 4500.

Change World Size and World Seed in SparkPanel under Settings, then restart. A new size or seed creates a new map, so do it at a wipe. For 2 to 10 players with friendly settings, see Rust settings for 2 to 10 players.

How to tell your server is too tight

  • The memory graph in SparkPanel climbs close to the plan's limit late in the wipe.
  • The server takes much longer to save, or players notice short freezes every few minutes (the save interval).
  • The server restarts or stops by itself late in the wipe, while it ran fine on wipe day.

If that only happens in the last days of a long wipe, a daily restart or a shorter wipe can be enough. If it happens in the first days, move to the next size.

Keep memory under control

  • Restart once a day with a schedule in SparkPanel (Schedules), for example at night. A restart frees memory and is normal for Rust servers.
  • Use decay. Decay removes abandoned bases. Turning it off (popular on PvE servers) means entities only grow.
  • Limit entities per player with plugins such as an entity limit plugin, if your players build huge bases.
  • Wipe on schedule. Facepunch forces a map wipe with the monthly update on the first Thursday of the month. Many servers also wipe weekly or every two weeks. Steps in Rust server: plugins and wipes.
  • Check your plugins. Remove plugins nobody uses. Choosing between frameworks? See Oxide or Carbon.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does a Rust server need? 8 GB for up to about 25 players on a map up to 3500. 12 GB for a community up to about 75 players. 16 GB for large or custom maps, heavy plugin sets and long wipes.

Can I pay Rust 12 GB or 16 GB per quarter or year? No. Rust 12 GB (€10.49) and Rust 16 GB (€13.39) are billed monthly only. Rust 8 GB can be paid per quarter (€7.19 per month) or monthly (€7.49).

Why does my Rust server use more memory every day? Every base, box and deployable is an entity kept in memory. Memory grows during a wipe and drops back after the wipe. A daily restart helps.

Can I upgrade from 8 GB to 12 GB without a wipe? Yes. Your map, bases and plugins stay when you upgrade.

Which map size should I use? Up to ~15 players 2000–2500, 15–50 players 3000–3500, 50 to 100+ players 4000–4500.
