Minecraft comes in two versions: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. They can't join each other's servers by default, so the version you and your friends play decides which server you need. Here's how to tell, and what to pick when your group mixes both.
Which version do you play?
- Java Edition: Minecraft on a PC or laptop (Windows, Mac or Linux) through the Minecraft Launcher, often called "Java" in the launcher.
- Bedrock Edition: Minecraft on a phone or tablet, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and the Minecraft app from the Microsoft Store on Windows.
The differences that matter for a server
| Java server | Bedrock server | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can join | PC and laptop | Phone, tablet, consoles and Windows app |
| Plugins | Yes, with Paper | No |
| Mods and modpacks | Yes, with Fabric, Forge or NeoForge | No (only add-ons) |
| At ServerSpark from | €0.99 per month (1 GB) | €0.99 per month (1 GB) |
Friends on both versions? Use Geyser
With the Geyser plugin, Bedrock players can join a Java server. That's the most common choice for mixed groups: you get plugins and the PC players, and phone and console players can join too. Set it up with Let Bedrock players join with Geyser.
A few things don't work perfectly over Geyser, such as some mods and very custom items. For a group that plays almost only on phones and consoles, a real Bedrock server is simpler.
What should you choose?
- Everyone plays on PC: a Java server.
- Everyone plays on phone, tablet or console: a Bedrock server.
- A mix: a Java server with Geyser.
