Mods make Project Zomboid even better with friends: more vehicles, more maps, smarter inventory. This guide shows which kinds of mods work well on a multiplayer server, and how to install them on your ServerSpark server.

Popular mods for multiplayer

On the Steam Workshop you'll find thousands of mods. These categories are favourites on co-op servers:

  • Maps: extra towns and areas to explore, such as Raven Creek or Eerie Country. Big maps need more memory.
  • Vehicles: more cars, trailers and repair options, such as Autotsar Trailers or Filibuster Rhymes' Used Cars.
  • Quality of life: small things that save a lot of clicking, such as Common Sense (use tools more logically) or Better Sorting (clearer inventory).
  • Progress: for example Skill Recovery Journal, so a player who dies doesn't lose all their skills.
  • Weapons and music: weapon packs or True Music for in-game radios and cassettes.
Always check on the Workshop page that a mod supports your game version (Build 41 or Build 42) and whether it needs other mods (often listed as Required items). A mod for the wrong build stops the server from starting.

Install mods on your server

  1. Open the mod on the Steam Workshop. Note the Workshop ID (the number in the page address) and the Mod ID (listed in the description).
  2. In SparkPanel, click Stop.
  3. Go to Files and open .cache/Server/ServerSpark.ini.
  4. Add the numbers to WorkshopItems= and the Mod IDs to Mods=, separated by semicolons:
    WorkshopItems=1111111111;2222222222
    Mods=FirstModID;SecondModID
  5. Save and click Start. The server downloads the mods on start; the first time takes a little longer.

Players don't need to do anything: they get the same mods automatically when they join.

Tips for a stable modded server

  • Add a few mods at a time. If the server won't start, you'll know which mod caused it.
  • Make a backup first via Backups → Create backup. We also back up every night.
  • Map mods change the world. Add them before you start playing, or start a new world: map mods don't always fit an existing save.
  • Watch your memory. Many mods and a big map can need more than 4 GB. Upgrading is a few clicks in SparkPanel, and you keep your world.

Frequently asked questions

The server doesn't start after adding a mod. Look at the console in SparkPanel: it usually names the mod that fails. Check the Mod ID (case-sensitive) and the game version, or remove the last mod you added.

Can I remove a mod later? Yes, remove it from both lines. Items or buildings from that mod may disappear from your world, so make a backup first.
