To install a data pack on a Minecraft Java server, upload the .zip to the datapacks folder inside your world folder (normally world/datapacks/) and restart the server. Data packs work on vanilla and on Paper, so you don't need mods or a mod loader, and your players don't install anything.

Facts about data packs and the /datapack command were checked on 29 October 2026 against the Minecraft Wiki pages "Data pack" and "Commands/datapack". Data packs are a Java Edition feature; on Bedrock you use add-ons instead.

What a data pack can do

A data pack changes the game's data, not its code: recipes, loot tables, advancements, functions (command scripts), structures and world generation. Popular examples are the Vanilla Tweaks packs (for example "more mob heads" or "multiplayer sleep") and packs that add new structures or terrain. Anything that needs new blocks, new mobs with their own models or a new game mechanic usually needs a mod instead; see Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge.

Step by step

  1. Check the version. Download the data pack for exactly the Minecraft version your server runs. A pack for another version may load with a warning or not at all.
  2. Check the zip. Open it on your PC. The file pack.mcmeta must be directly in the zip, next to a data folder. If you see another folder first, unzip it and zip the contents again.
  3. Stop the server in SparkPanel.
  4. Upload under Files: open your world folder (called world unless you changed level-name), then datapacks, and upload the zip there. No datapacks folder? Create it with New folder.
  5. Start the server and type datapack list in the console. Your pack appears as file/NameOfPack.zip under the enabled packs.
Data packs do not go in the plugins or mods folder. That's the most common reason a pack "does nothing".

Useful commands

  • datapack list: all packs, enabled and available.
  • datapack disable "file/NameOfPack.zip" and datapack enable "file/NameOfPack.zip": switch a pack off or on. Use quotes because the name contains a slash.
  • reload: reloads recipes, loot tables, advancements, functions and tags without a restart. According to the Minecraft Wiki, other parts, such as world generation, need a server restart.

World generation packs: install them before you explore

Packs that change terrain or add structures only affect chunks that are generated after you install them. Areas players have already visited stay as they are. Two ways to deal with that:

  • New world: stop the server, rename the old world folder (so you keep it), put the pack in world/datapacks/ of the new world folder, and start. Easier: install the pack first, then make the new world in a singleplayer test to check it, and upload that world.
  • Existing world: the new terrain only appears far away from where people have been. That works fine for structure packs on a world that is still small.

Always make a backup first under Backups. Removing a world generation pack later can leave a world that no longer loads cleanly.

Paper, Fabric and modded servers

Data packs work the same on Paper (our default), vanilla, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge: in the world's datapacks folder. Many modpacks already contain data packs, so check for clashes if recipes suddenly change.

Which plan?

Most data packs barely use memory, so choose by players and plugins: 2 GB (€1.89 per month paid per quarter, €2.19 monthly billing) for a few friends, 4 GB (€4.19 / €4.39) for 5 to 15 players. Heavy world generation packs make new chunks slower to generate; with many players exploring at once, 4 GB or more helps. See How much RAM does a Minecraft server need? and Minecraft server hosting.

Frequently asked questions

Where do data packs go on a Minecraft server? In the datapacks folder inside your world folder, usually world/datapacks/. Upload the .zip there and restart the server.

Do players need to install the data pack too? No. A data pack runs on the server only. Players join with a normal Minecraft Java game.

Do data packs work on a Paper server? Yes. Paper loads data packs from the world's datapacks folder, just like vanilla. Plugins and data packs can run side by side.

Why doesn't my data pack show up? Usually the zip has an extra folder around pack.mcmeta, the pack is for another Minecraft version, or it was put in plugins or mods instead of world/datapacks. Check with datapack list in the console.

Can I add a terrain data pack to an existing world? Yes, but it only changes chunks generated after you install it. Areas that were already explored stay the same.
