Updated 4 November 2026

Your Discord bot works on your own PC, but it goes offline as soon as you shut the PC down. To keep it online 24/7 you need hosting. You can do that for free or pay a little. Here's what the difference means in practice, with prices we checked on 28 October 2026.

Free bot hosting: what to expect

Free hosts are fine for testing and small hobby bots. Usually you accept a few limits in return:

  • Manual renewals. Some hosts make you click "renew" every few days or the bot stops. Bot-hosting.net's free plan, for example, needs a renewal every 4 days.
  • Little memory. Free plans are often around 256 MB RAM, which is tight once your bot is on many servers or keeps a cache.
  • Sleeping bots. Some general app platforms put apps to sleep when there's no web traffic, so a Discord bot needs tricks to stay awake.
  • No uptime promise. Free plans rarely promise anything about uptime or support.

How much memory does a Discord bot need?

A typical moderation, utility or fun bot in discord.js or discord.py runs fine in 512 MB. You need more if your bot is in very many servers, keeps large caches, or does heavy work like image generation or audio. At ServerSpark, 1 GB suits bots in many servers or with image work, and 2 GB suits music bots with many voice connections, AI bots that call an LLM API and keep big caches, or bots in very many servers. Lavalink/Java music bots aren't supported on the Node.js/Python plans. Start small: you can always move up.

All plans and the full comparison are on the Discord bot hosting page.

  • Your bot runs 24/7, with no renewals to click and no sleeping.
  • Node.js (discord.js, Eris and more) or Python (discord.py, nextcord, py-cord and more); package.json or requirements.txt is installed automatically.
  • Upload through the file manager or SFTP, or pull your code from Git on every restart.
  • If the bot crashes it's restarted automatically, and you see the logs in the live console.
  • Pay per month, quarter or year, never charged automatically, no setup fees. Pay with iDEAL, Bancontact, card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is free hosting good enough? For testing, yes. If people depend on your bot, a paid host is more reliable and you don't have to keep renewing.

Can I host more than one bot? Each plan runs one bot. For a second bot, simply order a second plan.

Where do I keep my bot token? In a .env file on the server, never in a public Git repository.
